How to know if your toddler is sleep deprived-and what you can do about it.

Ever wondered if your toddler simply isn't getting enough sleep? Sometimes it can be tricky to tell: whilst the average toddler needs between 11-13 hours of sleep; some children might need more or less. However, there are some things that can let you know if your toddler is missing out on sleep and how that can impact their behavior.

How do I know if my toddler is sleep-deprived?

There are a few things to look out for which may give a clue that your toddler needs more sleep.

  • They may be overactive-They can appear excited and have loads of energy (but appearances can be deceptive!)

  •  Lack of sleep makes it hard for them to focus and they can become very distracted.

  • They may find it hard to manage their emotions, grumpier, and more irritable during the day.

  • They may be unable to follow simple requests.

  • Their behaviour might be challenging-with lots of tantrums and finding transitions and change hard.

  • Despite being tired, they may have trouble falling asleep, and take a long time to settle at nap and bedtimes

  • Their nap schedule may be erratic.

How to deal with a sleep-deprived toddler.

If you think your little one is sleep-deprived, try these top tips to help tackle it head-on.

  • Give a clear message - nighttime is sleep time and nap time is coming.

  • Be consistent- timing and routine are crucial to a good night’s sleep.

  • Establish a regular bedtime routine- This will regulate their body clock and ensure healthy sleep/wake patterns. Having a regular routine at about the same time every night means your child’s body will start to prepare for sleep as soon as you start this process.

  • Introduce a calm down time -Avoid stimulating activities in the hour before bed, turn off the TV and stop any electronics. Research has shown light from computers, iPads and screens can interfere with the production of the sleep hormone melatonin.

  • Keep the bedroom at a comfortable temperature- ideally 18C (64F). This is probably a little lower than the rest of the house. Children sleep better when they are cooler.

  • Offer a warm bath -a quiet relaxing bath, no longer than 10 minutes. Keeping it short means bath time is not too stimulating. The bonus of coming out of the warm water allows the body to cool which in turn quickly triggers the sleep hormone melatonin.

  • Move straight to the bedroom from the bath - going back downstairs at this time will lose the focus and magic of the routine and make your child think it’s time to play again.

  • Some children may benefit from more connection especially if any big changes like starting nursery or mum returning to work.

  • A floor bed could be a temporary option if you and your toddler love it, it does not have to be a more permanent solution.

I have worked with a few parents who have used a floor bed successfully.
The benefits ARE:
Offers a safe and comfortable sleep environment that promotes a sense of independence and freedom for your little one.
Unlike traditional cots, floor beds allow toddlers to move in and out of bed easily. The absence of restrictive bars or walls helps minimize feelings of confinement, enabling your child to explore their surroundings and settle down more naturally.
Furthermore, floor beds eliminate the risk of falls associated with raised cots, providing peace of mind for parents.
By encouraging a seamless transition between play and sleep, a floor bed can contribute to a more relaxed bedtime experience, ultimately leading to improved sleep patterns and better overall sleep for your toddler.
